1. Surveys & Polls: Ask and You Shall Receive
Think of surveys as the espresso shot of audience research: quick, effective, and straight to the point. You ask questions, and your audience spills the tea (or coffee, depending on their preference).
How to Do It
- Use Google Forms, Typeform, or SurveyMonkey to create a short and engaging survey to uncover your audience’s pain points and desires (How to identify them.)
- Ask open-ended questions like:
- "What’s your biggest challenge with [your niche] right now?"
- "If you could wave a magic wand and fix one thing, what would it be?"
- Keep it short and sweet (5-7 questions max ... I prefer less, but sometimes you must ask more... Just remember: Never more than 7). People have the attention span of a TikTok video these days.
- Offer an incentive for them to fill in the survey... a freebie, a discount, or an entry into a giveaway.
Example
If you’re launching a digital course for marketers, you might ask:
- "What’s the one thing holding you back from growing your business?"
- "Do you prefer learning through video, text, or live sessions?"
- "Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?" (Okay, maybe not that one—but a fun question keeps engagement high!)
I have just finished a survey a couple of days ago, where I had a suggestion of doing an offline course teaching in my city... I didn't like the idea, but I turned into my subscribers... I asked them if they would rather learn offline!
The vast majority said "NO" ... which saved me an insane amount of useless efforts if I applied the idea without asking!
2. Social Media Listening: The Goldmine Most People Ignore
People love to complain online. And guess what?
Those complaints = your business opportunities.
How to Do It
- Join Facebook groups, Reddit communities, and X (Twitter) threads related to your niche to discover where they are most active (Learn more.)
- Search for posts where people say things like, “I’m struggling with…” or “How can I …”
- Use tools like Brand24 or Hootsuite to monitor conversations around keywords in your industry.
- Pay attention to the exact language they use. If 50 people say, "I need help growing my email list," don’t call your course "The Ultimate Lead Generation Accelerator." Just call it "How to Grow Your Email List."
Example
For our marketer course, you might find posts like:
- "I know I need an email list, but I don’t even know where to start."
- "Should I be on TikTok, Instagram, or LinkedIn? Feeling overwhelmed."
- "Funnels? I thought those were for baking. Help!"
Boom. You now have direct insights into what your audience struggles with... and how to position your offer 😉
3. Analyzing Competitors: Why Reinvent the Wheel?
Your competitors have already done some of the hard work for you.
How to Do It
- Identify 3-5 competitors who serve your ideal audience.
- Study their blog comments, FAQs, social media interactions, and ads.
- Look for gaps. What are their customers still complaining about?
- Read their negative reviews on Trustpilot, Facebook, or even Amazon if they have a book. People get honest there.
Example
If a top-selling marketing course has reviews saying:
- "The content was good, but it was too complicated."
- "Wish there was more hands-on guidance instead of just theory."
- "No support group, so I felt lost."
Guess what? Your course should be simple, action-based, and include a private members' community.
4. Using Tools Like Google Analytics & Facebook Audience Insights
Sometimes, data is your best friend. And no, you don’t need a PhD in Data Science... just a willingness to click a few buttons.
How to Do It
- Google Analytics (of course, you need a functioning website that has visitors to collect these types of data):
- Check Audience Demographics (age, location, interests).
- Look at Behavior Reports (which pages people spend the most time on).
- Analyze traffic sources (Where do your visitors come from?)
Here's a screenshot from DominateMarketing.com analytics account:

- Facebook Audience Insights:
- Find out the interests, demographics, and behaviors of people who like pages similar to yours.
- Discover what other pages they follow (great for targeting ads later!)
Example
Let’s say Google Analytics shows most of your website visitors are 25-34-year-old females from the U.S. who spend the most time reading your "How to Get Clients" blog post.
You now know:
- They’re likely freelancers or coaches struggling with client acquisition.
- They enjoy blog-style content.
- You should create more content (or a course) teaching client-getting strategies.
